Howdy, y’all! ðŸ¤
Today, I present to the world my very first genre guide. Every once in a while, I’ll list a genre that’ll definitely leave a few people scratching their heads. Some of these are simply obscure subgenres or even microgenres, whereas others are simply bullshit terms I made up for the sake of convenience ‘cuz I’m a pretentious douchebag.
Today’s topic is emotional metalcore. Or emotive metalcore. Or emo metalcore. Or metallic emo. Hell, I’ve even seen one person refer to it as satellitecore, a reference to Hopesfall’s iconic The Satellite Years.
Like the name suggests, emotional metalcore is a specific style of metalcore which takes influence from emo, as well as post-hardcore and melodic hardcore. Bands that play this style are definitely much more on the hardcore side of the metalcore equation than the metal side. It still contains the harsh screaming vocals, metallic riffs, and breakdowns that are typical of metalcore, but combines it with soaring anthemic clean vocals, far more melodic riffs (but more in the vein of melodic hardcore and post-hardcore rather than the melodeath influenced melodic metalcore that was also popular around the same time), poetic introspective lyrics, and even some Midwest-style twinkly clean arpeggios from time to time.
It should be noted there are also plenty of bands that play a hybrid of metalcore and screamo like Acme, Carol, and Majority Rule, but those bands are much harsher and less melodic, and are really kind of their own thing. As such, I won’t be including this particular style (although it may be worth writing a genre guide about this kind of metallic screamo in the future).
But anyways, without further ado, here’s a few songs that exemplify the style:
