One of the reasons I love Bandcamp so much is their daily blog, which is frequently a goldmine of lesser known artists deserving of your attention. While trying to find some modern day new jack swing, I came upon this article. One of the artists featured was husband/wife duo, The APX. While I wouldn’t quite call their sophomore effort new jack swing (although genre pioneer Teddy Riley and ‘80s and ‘90s superstar Jody Watley make a cameo appearance), this is still a prime slab of retro dance goodness.
This is an album that masters the art of mining nostalgia while still sounding fresh, and not just a stale ripoff. Lots of retro soul/groovy synth funk and old school house beats with a modern sheen. It’s a love letter to the good ol’ days of late 20th century R&B and dance music. The funky basslines and lush synths courtesy of husband Dee, complemented by the gorgeous belting vocals of wife Erika, is a good time for all who listen. Songs about love, songs about sex, and songs about dancin’ all night provide wonderful feel-good vibes. Music this fun and this polished has all the ingredients of a hit, which makes it all the more tragic that this is so little known.
